Constitution of Religious Studies Majors Association

ARTICLE ONE: The Name

The name of this association will be The Religious Studies Majors Association, here-in-after, "the Association."

ARTICLE TWO: The Purpose

The Association will be concerned with the establishment of better student-faculty relationships both in and out of the classroom, both with majors and non-majors enrolled in the Religious Studies Department. Such qualitative change of relations may take any form agreed upon by the membership, whether it is social or extracurricular education.

ARTICLE THREE: The Membership

Section Two: Associate membership will be granted to students expressing an interest in majoring in Religion, but not having yet declared their major; to all students doing part, or all, of their related work in the department; and to students having completed nine hours of Religious Studies courses, but not as part of any formally declared program of related work or major in the department.

Section Three: Faculty membership in the Association will be granted to all Arts and Science faculty members considered by the University to be members of the Religious Studies Department, and to any Divinity School professors teaching undergraduates Religious Studies courses during the particular year for which membership is to be considered.

Section Four: Membership is open to all persons subject to the Above restriction, without regard to race, sex, national origin, or religious belief.

ARTICLE FOUR: The Procedures of Formal Meetings

Section One: Full members and Faculty members will be given the right to vote at all meetings at which then are present. Associate members may be invited to speak, but may not vote.

Section Two: Meetings of the Association may be conducted in a formal manner at anytime by agreement of a simple majority of those members present.

Section Three: Formal meetings will be conducted according to Robert's Rules of Order and with the Chair of the Association presiding, as set forth in Article Five, Duties and Responsibilities of Officers.

ARTICLE FIVE: The Duties and Responsibilities of the Officers

Section One: The chief officer of the Association will be the Chair, whose duties will include: 1). Conducting any such formal meetings as the membership should deem necessary; 2). Overseeing the receipt and disbursement of all Association funds; 3). Acting as coordinator of any recommendations on faculty promotion which the Religious Studies Departmental Chair should request; 4). Acting as the official representative of the Association to any other group, organization, governing or administrative body; 5). Assisting the Vice Chair of the Association in their duties; and 6). Undertaking any other duties and responsibilities placed upon them by the members of the Association.

Section Two: The Vice Chair of the Association responsibilities will include: 1). Planning and coordinating meetings of the Association, including arranging the dates and locations of the meetings, notifying the membership, and seeing that transportation is provided where necessary; 2). Assisting the Chairman in their duties; 3). Serving as acting Chair should that of office become vacant, until such time as a new chair is named; and 4). Undertaking any other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Section Three: The faculty advisor of the Association will act as representative of the faculty members to the student members and communicate to the Chair of the Association between meetings such items of importance as deemed necessary. In the event that the replacement of both Association officers becomes necessary, the Faculty Advisor will call a meeting of the Association and act as Chair until new officers are elected.

ARTICLE SIX: The Elections

Section One: The two officers will be elected at a meeting to be held in April, by those voting members present, and will assume the duties of their office beginning day 15 of the same year.

Section Two: Should it become necessary to replace one of the officers, the other officer will call a vote of the membership at the next meeting of the Association, at which time the newly elected officer will take office.

Section Three: Upon a two third vote of all eligible to do so, new elections will be called at any time to replace an officer deemed negligent in the execution of the duties of their office.

 ARTICLE SEVEN: The Amendments

This constitution may be amended at any time by a two third vote of the total voting members.

ARTICLE EIGHT: The Effective Date of this Constitution
