Course Description: The Pauline Interpretaion of Christianity
An introduction to Pauline Christianity and its place in the early church, using the letters of Paul the deutero-Pauline letters, and the portraits of Paul in Acts. [This semester emphasis: Romans.]

PEDAGOGICAL GOALS:

1) Introducing members of the seminar to Paul and his interpretation of Christianity and to the different interpretations of Paul by his readers, in order to help members of the seminar to gain a critical perspective on the great variety of interpretations which they encounter.

2) Inviting members of the seminars to develop their own interpretations of Paul's letter to the Romans, and

3) Teaching them how to assess their interpretations by comparing it with other interpretations (Christian believers' interpretations and scholarly interpretations) by understanding and appreciating:

a) how Christian believers interpreted and interpret Romans as Scripture (beginning with its first interpretations, in the Deutero-Pauline letters and Acts);

b) the role of religious, cultural, social, political, and historical contexts in any interpretation;

c) the historical character of Romans and thus its religious, cultural/literary, social/ecclesiological, political/rhetorical, and historical character.

This is why

 

Each Session Will Have Three Parts:

Part A: Introducing Paul and his interpretation [hermeneutics] of Christianity (assigned readings, quizzes on key theological concepts; lecture); the Hermeneutical frame

Part B: Round-Table Discussion of YOUR interpretations of a passage of Romans (you need to come to class with it);

Part C: Assessment of your interpretations in terms of key theological concepts discussed in Part 1.
