Graduate Student Activities

The graduate students elect two student representatives each year to participate in faculty meetings and departmental decision-making. Students have an official vote on most departmental matters and consultation rights on faculty appointments, promotions, and terminations. Incomplete policies, preliminary examination proposals, and voting rights are some of the issues which have been raised and dealt with in the last several years. Graduate students and faculty jointly determine speakers. A colloquium is held each week in which a graduate student, member of the faculty, or visitor presents a paper. A student representative is also appointed to the Graduate Student Council, which is concerned with departmental interaction, library facilities, housing, and programs of the University at large.
