Welcome

Welcome to Vanderbilt University's Fine Arts Department.

We live in a visually exciting culture. Art is a form of communication that both influences and reflects many elements of our world. Art history courses present the student with an opportunity to delve into the minds and times of exceptional artists and architects. Studio art courses allow a student to gain the experience of the refining his or her original ideas and in developing the techniques required for the realization of the concept.

The diverse faculty in the Department of Fine Arts is made up of scholars and artists who are making important contributions to each of their fields. We are noted as a strong teaching department, sharing our enthusiasm for the field with our students.

Students may take advantage of Vanderbilt's two active galleries on campus that show both contemporary and historical exhibitions. The department also holds a sizeable study collection of paintings, prints, and objects, with special strength in Asian art. Viewing the work helps to provide a greater insight into the study of art.

Art can be a rewarding study or career. Graduates of our program have gone on to professional and graduate schools, both in art-related areas as well as business and the major professions. We hope that you will take a moment to view the rest of our site to learn what our department has to offer.
