Undergraduate Program Studio Art The undergraduate program in fine arts serves the undergraduate community at Vanderbilt, offering a degree program in the College of Arts and Science. The department supervises the B. A. major in fine arts (30 hours), as well as a minor in art history and a minor in studio art. Courses may be taken in related disciplines to supplement a major or minor in art history/studio art. A recommended set of pre-architecture courses is available for those interested in further study of architecture after graduation. [Professional schools of architecture seek students who have developed the ability to find creative solutions to artistic problems. Students may select any major but would want to include courses that emphasize a broad sense of art and architectural history, including courses in studio art. Further information on the pre-architecture program is available from Professor Michael L. Aurbach of the Department of Fine Arts.] In the Department of Fine Arts, one finds faculty members whose classes cover a wide range of art history areas and major media in studio art. Different approaches are encouraged so that students find a variety of methods to pursue as they learn about the critical and creative aspects of both fields. More advanced research is possible in upper-level courses, including senior seminars, so that a fine arts student is prepared to consider graduate work, museum studies, or art-related careers once the program is completed. Information on the fine arts at Vanderbilt may be found in the Undergraduate Catalog under Fine Arts. For further discussion of the major, minors, or elective courses in the Department of Fine Arts, contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies through the departmental office.
