Multiplicity: New Directions in Contemporary Printmaking, Artists'
Books, and Other Multiples Drawn from the leading publishers and printers of fine arts prints, artists' books, and other forms of limited edition multiples, Multiplicity will present a survey of works by artists who represent an innovative approach to the mediums. Planned contributing publishers include: Alan Cristea Gallery, London; Brooke Alexander, New York; Flatbed Press, Austin; Graphicstudio, Tampa; Landfall Press, Chicago; Quartet Editions, New York; Solo Impressions, New York; and Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), West Islip, New York. Work by the artists featured will be as varied as the individual publishers and presses, but will particularly encompass new techniques and stylistic developments. (September 3-October 18, 1998) |

IN HIGH BOHEMIA Photographic Portraits of Artists by Carl Van Vechten from the 1930s Carl Van Vechten--critic, novelist, social and cultural entrepreneur--is best known today for the thousands of photographs he had taken from 1930 to 1964, the year of his death. With these images, he created a unique document representing two generations of creative genius, both European and American. This exhibition, drawn from the extensive archive of photographs by Van Vechten at Fisk University, Nashville, encompasses a broad range of artists, from Thomas Hart Benton to Marcel Duchamp, and from Salvador Dali to Georgia O'Keefe. As a complement to the photographs featured in this exhibition, representative work by the artists photographed by Van Vechten from the collections of Fisk and Vanderbilt Universities, as well as local private collections, will also be exhibited. Artists featured include Richmond Barthe, Thomas Hart Benton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Salvador Dali, Jo Davidson, Aaron Douglas, Marcel Duchamp, Louis M. Eilshemius, Rockwell Kent, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Georgia O'Keefe, Man Ray, Diego Rivera, Maurice Sterne, and Alfred Stieglitz. This exhibition is a collaborative project between Fisk University and the Vanderbilt Universtiy Fine Arts Gallery. |

FRAMES OF REFERENCE Photography and mixed-media work by Henry Huffnagle THE 1997 MARGARET STONEWALL WOOLDRIDGE HAMBLET AWARD WINNER EXHIBITION This exhibition features works by Henry Huffnagle, the 1997 Hamblet Award winner. The Hamblet award winner is selected by a panel of outside jurors from an open invitational for graduating seniors held each spring. The award, a $15,000 grant to be used for travel and study during the year following graduation, culminates in this exhibition.

BYZANTIUM Art and Ritual The art works in this exhibition center on a series of full-scale fresco copies of medieval wall paintings that still decorate major Byzantine churches in Serbia and Macedonia. Faithfully copied by Zdenka Zivkovic, a world renowned fresco copyist and restorer, the works featured in the exhibition were executed in the medieval fresco technique, which involves painting in pigment on wet plaster. Drawn from the Fine Arts Gallery Collection, these works portray major biblical events and scenes, serving the purpose of communicating Christian beliefs and traditions to a wide range of people.

ADGFAD Contemporary Graphic Arts from the Association of Art Directors, Graphic Designers and Illustrators, Barcelona, Spain This exhibition is drawn from a collection of posters recently donated to the Fine Arts Gallery which were produced as invitations for Spanish or foreign professionals resident in Spain to participate in the LAUS competition, the awards of which are granted to the most representative works in visual communications "with genuine creative and graphic design value, in [their] diverse applications." Technical innovations in graphic design combine with curious choices of content to arrive at these unique posters.
