IN HIGH BOHEMIA
Photographic Portraits of Artists by Carl Van Vechten from the 1930s
Carl Van Vechten--critic, novelist, social and cultural entrepreneur--is best known today for the thousands of photographs he had taken from 1930 to 1964, the year of his death. With these images, he created a unique document representing two generations of creative genius, both European and American. This exhibition, drawn from the extensive archive of photographs by Van Vechten at Fisk University, Nashville, encompasses a broad range of artists, from Thomas Hart Benton to Marcel Duchamp, and from Salvador Dali to Georgia O'Keefe. As a complement to the photographs featured in this exhibition, representative work by the artists photographed by Van Vechten from the collections of Fisk and Vanderbilt Universities, as well as local private collections, will also be exhibited. Artists featured include Richmond Barthe, Thomas Hart Benton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Salvador Dali, Jo Davidson, Aaron Douglas, Marcel Duchamp, Louis M. Eilshemius, Rockwell Kent, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Georgia O'Keefe, Man Ray, Diego Rivera, Maurice Sterne, and Alfred Stieglitz. This exhibition is a collaborative project between Fisk University and the Vanderbilt Universtiy Fine Arts Gallery.

BYZANTIUM
Art and Ritual
The art works in this exhibition center on a series of full-scale fresco copies of medieval wall paintings that still decorate major Byzantine churches in Serbia and Macedonia. Faithfully copied by Zdenka Zivkovic, a world renowned fresco copyist and restorer, the works featured in the exhibition were executed in the medieval fresco technique, which involves painting in pigment on wet plaster. Drawn from the Fine Arts Gallery Collection, these works portray major biblical events and scenes, serving the purpose of communicating Christian beliefs and traditions to a wide range of people.
