The Graduate Program

The degree of Master of Arts in Art History is offered in a two-year program during which students complete course work, a foreign language exam, and a thesis. All work is closely supervised by the faculty, especially the Director of Graduate Studies, the Graduate Review Committee, and the two readers of the thesis. Students are expected to enroll in course work that expands their historical background in as many periods and areas as possible, while at the same time beginning to concentrate on an area of special focus that will lead to the research and writing of the thesis.

The faculty of nine art historians offer comprehensive coverage of the history of art and stress attention to methodological issues. Students completing the degree work are prepared to continue their graduate studies in a Ph.D. program or pursue other careers in art, such as museum studies and journalism.

The program is an intensive and fulfilling experience that trains the young scholar in critical thinking, articulate presentation, and mutually rewarding teamwork. A particular goal is to foster the excitement of research and the sharing of knowledge. Creative problem solving and provocative intellectual interaction are encouraged as the means to scholarship of high quality.
