Vanderbilt has a unique visual resource that is closely connected to the Samuel H. Kress Collection. It consists of a photo archive organized by Alessandro Contini, assisted by Evelyn Sandberg-Vavala, and later added to by Gualtiero Volterra. This research collection of more than 60,000 photographs--many of which are one-of-a-kind--was assembled from the 1930s to the 1960s by Florentine art experts who helped assemble the Contini and Kress Collections. Housed in more than 300 leather-bound volumes organized by major Italian schools and a lesser number representing other European traditions, these photographs provide visual support materials for scholars and advanced students who undertake research in these areas.
