Early Work

1979 - 1985

As an art student in Kansas during the late 1970's I noticed that the language used in describing acts of creation was filled with words about death and violence. We "execute" pieces of art, "shoot" photographs, and "hang" paintings. It appeared that something had to be destroyed in order to be created.

Many of the early works incorporated dead animals because it was an immediate way of dealing with the subject of death. My use of architectural designs with death-related images was an effort to de-sensationalize an inherently dramatic subject.
