The Bible Considered as Literary Text

While I teach a course entitled The Bible in Literature, many students and scholars are also interested in bringing to bear literary critical techniques on their reading of the Bible. As the following guides and bibliographies illustrate, literary approaches to biblical studies have a long and rich tradition. To study the Bible as a literary text is not to deny or denigrate the special status of the Bible in our culture, any more than a study of literary devices and techniques in the U.S. Constitution or the works of Sigmund Freud implies that those texts do not also enjoy status which exceeds any "literary" quality they might posess.

Studies of the Bible as Literature share with the study of the Bible in Literature many assumptions, interests, resources, and of course scholarly studies. Accordingly, the list(s) of studies and resources that follows will overlap somewhat with lists found in other parts of this page and the resources to which it has links.
