Post-modernity is an aesthetic, a cultural condition, that breaks away from the hierarchy, structure, and truth of modernity. Baudrillard argues that everything about our aesthetic has changed as a result of our changes in media. We are existing in a post-modern condition characterized by the depletion of meta-narratives, the overarching explanations of the universe.

In our current condition, the meta-narratives are breaking down, creating an environment founded upon tolerance. This is a condition in which ‘anything goesÂ’ and any way of being is acceptable since we no longer believe in the meta-narratives. Baudrillard explains the idea of access through excess, or hyperrealism. In the post-modern condition, all of our experiences are images proliferated through media -- they are hyperrealized. They too, have lost much of their meaning and are leading us toward cultural cynicism.
