"Waking Nations: Riddles in Blake, Dickens, and Joyce."
Professor Jay Clayton, Director.
| The dissertation explores the literary and political work riddles perform at cultural thresholds: courtship, initiation, death rituals, moments of greeting, and intercultural relations. Through analysis of nineteenth-century periodicals, Jerusalem, Our Mutual Friend, and Finnegans Wake, the study uncovers a new narrative genre, the riddle, and extends our understanding of word play in literate culture. |
