In order to balance Skywalker’s relatively unchanging immature character, Lucas portrays LukeÂ’s androids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, with good-natured, human-like personalities. R2Â’s admirable devotion to safely delivering the plans of the Death Star to the rebels proves his desire for good to prevail over evil. In the opening scenes of Star Wars, R2Â’s dedication also brings Luke together with what will soon evolve into the core of the rebel alliance: Ben, Han Chubacca, and Leia. C-3PO also seems human in his dedication to R2. When Luke and his Uncle Owen purchase C-3PO from the jawas, C-3PO attempts to remain united with R2 by suggesting that Luke also purchase R2. Also, after an Imperial ship shoots R2 during the destruction of the Death Star, C-3PO, in a worried spell about the well-being of his fellow android, volunteers to donate any of his circuits that may assist in the repairs of R2. C-3POÂ’s dedication and compassion for R2 seems more human than machine-like.
