Luke remains a fairly undeveloped character throughout Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back; however, R2-D2 and C-3PO’s vibrant personalities illuminate the film and balance LukeÂ’s relatively flat character. By portraying the androids with human characteristics, Lucas seems to imply that machines will develop to the point at which they hold many similarities to humans. In contemporary society, machines lack the soul and empathy which constitutes a human, but Lucas argues that further technological development results in more complex and human-like machines. However, in Return of the Jedi, Lucas re-examines his views on the relationship between men and machines.
