Introduction

First came the birth control pill.  Then abortion.  Today, a hot controversy on the issue of women's choice (indeed, couple's choice) emerges--eugenics.  The control of the genetic outcome of tomorrow's progeny may lead to a world in which couple's ignore "primitive" means of controlling the outcome of their children such as the consumption of certain foods or medicines, instead fulfilling their baby dreams with genetic engineering.  Many claim that eugenics is a "false science," merely a practice of selective prevention of unfavorable genes for social, racial, or political ends" (Site 2). Others counter that eugenics is a true study of methods that improve the genetic legacy of human attributes (Site 3), encouraging favorable genes to proliferate at the cost of unfavorable genes to be lost over time.  As with virtually any controversy, eugenics involves a number of opposing views, all wagered by both the pro and con sides of the issue.  Is eugenics merely an anticipation of a brave new world or a promising future in genetic science that reflects modern society?

The following is a “mock” debate and in no way intends to misrepresent modern ideals of society.

The debate may be read in any of the following forms:
