General InformationEstablished in 1947, Vanderbilt's Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies is the oldest and strongest interdisciplinary program on campus. It is dedicated to advancing scholarly and applied knowledge about Latin America and Iberia through teaching, research, publication, scholarly exchange, and community outreach. The Center draws upon renowned Vanderbilt faculty from the Department of Anthropology, Economics, Fine Arts, History, Political Science, Sociology, and Spanish and Portuguese and offers a broad-based, interdisciplinary education, promoting study abroad in Latin America and Spain. It maintains an interactive research community by sponsoring faculty colloquia, receptions and conferences, and a speakers series which brings distinguished scholars, government and business leaders, and social activists to campus. CLAIS also publishes a bi-annual newsletter. Our undergraduate program is ranked eighth in the nation by the Gourman Report and students may participate in an honors program and study abroad programs in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, or Spain. The Center offers a Masters degree in Latin American Studies and, in conjunction with the Owen Graduate School of Management, a joint Master of Arts and Master of Business. The Department of Education designated CLAIS as one of its Foreign Language and Area Studies Programs and funds three graduate fellowships annually, as well summer travel to Brazil for intensive language training. Vanderbilt CLAIS is also one of the select graduate programs approved by the U.S. Army for its Foreign Area Officer training. Our special strengths lie in Mesoamerican anthropology and
archaeology, the history, politics, language and literature of Brazil, Iberian and
Spanish-American literature and languages, the Southern Cone and Caribbean Studies. At the
same time, our Center has breadth as members of the faculty have conducted primarily field
research in and published about most major countries in Latin America. |
