VU Beckman Scholars Program Frequently Asked Questions Q. Can I apply as a freshman or sophomore? A. Yes. Q. Can I apply as a junior? A. Yes, but you must commit to complete the second summer of research on campus, which will likely follow your graduation date in May. Q. Does my mentor need to be one of the ten ‘Beckman Scholars Mentors’? A. Not necessarily - one Dean’s Beckman Scholar will be named, and any faculty member in the Departments of Chemistry or Biological Sciences is an eligible mentor. Q. Do I need to arrange my own housing for the summer? A. Yes, but we may be able to assist with on-campus housing at a reduced rate. Q. Can I leave for a study abroad or similar experience during my time as a Scholar. A. No, your support as a Scholar is for 15 consecutive months, and you must participate in continuous research during this period. Any study abroad experiences must end prior to the first summer, or begin after the second summer. Q. Can I register for research credit hours as a Scholar? A. For the summers, you may not enroll in any courses or workshops (e.g. test prep courses). Since you are receiving a stipend during the academic year, you will need to consult with the College to determine if this is allowable.
