Interferometry & Analytic Chemistry

Our research centers around Backscattering Interferometry (BSI) an innovative technology developed by the Bornhop Lab. In 2007 our Science paper showed that BSI is a highly sensitive technique for detecting the binding or interaction of virtually any molecule without the need for sample tagging or chemical derivatization. BSI measures the change in refractive index resulting from conformation, hydration and/or dipole alterations during a binding event; thus it senses nearly all interactions without mass sensitivity, rapidly and inexpensively. It has been used to produce pM-fM level biomarker detection limits in complex matrices such as blood saliva and urine.
