Stephen Dotson
I grew up in the west Texas, graduated from high school in 1998 and then Howard Payne University with a major in chemistry and a minor in math in 2001. My interests include music and watching movies. After many years of marching and concert bands, ensembles, and state tryouts, I still play my trumpet but in limited quantities.
My Research:
I have a number of projects that are focused on the backscatter interferometer. The backscatter interferometer has proven a unique and powerful technique for measuring RI in binding studies and is even able to provide kinetic information. This detector has been also been utilized to observe enzymatic reactions as they occur. Just as in the binding study, this technique provides a method of observing a reaction take place without perturbing the system by adding a probe or marker. Optical activity measurements are inherently dependent upon the pathlength the light travels. This has been a limitation for microfluidics. However with the backscatter interferometer, light makes several passes through the solution in the channel before proceeding to the detector providing a unique optical activity detector.
