More on the June 10th, 2002 protests in Tecpán

Thousands of protestors fill the streets of Tecpán on the morning of June 10th, closing
off all traffic. They were demonstrating against a tax to be levied by the
municipality.

By late morning, the protest had turned violent. Windows in the town hall and
several business were broken, the mayor's car (above) and home (below) were burned, and
the mayor and police force were driven out of town.

On June 17th, the Council of Traditional Authorities and the Indigenous Maya Defense
Council mediated discussions between the two sides. Here Mario Sanic explains the
compromise they propose. On June 25th, Tecpán's municipal council (led by the
exiled mayor) announced they would not seek to collect the tax in question.
