Waitlist Released: VU 2013 Class Full

Thom July 15th, 2009

Later today we will be emailing official word that we are releasing our waitlist for the Vanderbilt class of 2013.  If you have been following along, you know that we haven’t made any offers to the list since late May.  We had been waiting to release the waitlist just in case we needed to make more offers.  Like most things in highly selective admissions, on one hand it is exciting that that we’re one step closer to the next incoming class starting at Vandy, on the other, I also know that this may come as a disappointment for those of you still out there waiting.  For those of you in the latter category, I genuinely wish you the best of luck, and I hope that if nothing else, “just knowing” brings a bit of closure.  I appreciate you reading our posts.

Here is a copy of the email that will be going out:

We appreciate your continued interest in Vanderbilt University.  At this time, our class entering fall 2009 is full, and we will not be able to admit additional students from our waiting list.  I know that you will have a fulfilling college career, and that the school you have chosen will benefit from your being there.

Should your interest in Vanderbilt continue, you may want to consider the possibility of transferring after one year of study elsewhere.  Our office is happy to help with any questions you may have about the transfer application process.

I wish you the best of luck in your future.

Sincerely, John O. Gaines
Director of Undergraduate Admissions

PreVU Days: Good Morning Class of 2014

Thom June 15th, 2009

“June, she’ll make you change your tune,” says the legend Paul Simon.  While most of Vanderbilt’s campus is winding up for the arrival of the VU Class of 2013, Vandy Undergraduate Admissions, like we always do at this time, is almost completely focused on the next class (except for our waitlist, see below for more on this).  So it’s with a mixture of excitement and amazement (didn’t we just finish an admissions cycle) that we will welcome a new group of prospective students this morning at our first PreVU Days of the summer.  These days are fun for us in that we get to meet new friends from all across the country, and collectively start turning our thoughts to the fall.

Summer Melt

One of the things we enjoy in our job is to try and unpack for people some of the strange and quirky terms and traditions that occur in admissions (see Brad’s Commando Guidelines post).  One nearly ubiquitous term in admissions vernacular is “summer melt” referring to when a college loses deposited students (as students withdraw to attend elsewhere) after the May 1st deadline, but before the beginning of the school year and the 10th day enrollment census (when the official incoming class is counted).  Every college “melts” some students and it is mostly attributed to those students being taken off of a waitlist elsewhere.  Colleges will often accept more deposits and/or take more from their waitlist in order to guard against their anticipated summer melt.  project wrong on your melt and you can end up either over- or under-enrolling the class.

This brings me to our waitlist.  Right now, we’re watching our melt and have not gone out with any additional calling over this last week.  Without getting into specifics (recall that as a practice, we don’t roll out data until the cycle completes) we are watching our melt to see if additional calling from the waitlist is necessary.  So as it stands right now, we’re in a bit of wait and see status; the waitlist is still active and none of the colleges are closed.  Again, as I know more, I will try and post updates here.

A Post for New Vandy Parents and Short Waitlist Update

Thom June 3rd, 2009

I have three sons, all under the age of three, and I work in admissions.  That means that my ability to make a living depends on the decision-making of 17-year olds, and my ability to get a good night’s sleep depends on the whims of 4-month olds (our twin boys).  I am like the dad in the car commercial from some years ago that wonders out loud while driving his toddler around town, “Now I’m a dad, and it’s my job to tell him, ‘No, that cookie’s fallen on the floor, you can’t eat that . . . when inside my head, I’m thinking - five second rule - that cookie’s still good.’”  I am, like most parents I know, a work in progress on the parenting front.

Watching that move-in video from last week got me thinking about what the parents who read this blog are going through in this process of supporting, and ultimately preparing their child to go off to college.  I think about what my parents did for me when I went off to school.  They had just driven off after hugs and few wetted eyes.  I got back to my room and started up my computer and on my desktop they had each written me a letter.  Each one stated how proud they were of me, and gave advice about what to look out for in the coming years.  I still have those letters.  I loved it so much, in fact, that for each of my sons, I have been writing them letters since they were born.  The thought is that I will someday give them over to them when they go off to college.

So it is with humility that I attempt to offer advice to parents at least 4 times my senior in the parenting biz.  I won’t pretend that I know first hand what it is like to send your child off to college, but I have been a second hand observer to the process, having worked for colleges almost a decade.  The Southern journalist Hodding Carter wrote, “There are two lasting bequests we can give our children: One is roots, the other is wings.”  You’ve given them so much throughout their life, and have taught them well.  Trust them now in hopes that some small portion of what you’ve taught has sunk in, most importantly the love you gave them.

So with that here’s a couple of pieces of advice:

1) Most college students change their major, it’s not a big deal.  Be prepared for some homesickness, it’s also not a big deal.

2) Leave his or her room like it is for a while.  Yes, he or she will be living at college, but that room is still home, and it can be unsettling to come back and see the room has been reacquisitioned by the family.  It’s not a scientific sample or anything, but every friend I had in college that had this happen to them had issues like a magazine rack about it.

3) Come for parent weekend.  You’ll love it.

4) Send care packages, your child will love it.  The Vandy bookstore will even have ready-made packages for you to order in the fall.

5) Consider getting involved in the Vanderbilt Parent and Family Association and stay connected to your son or daughter’s community.  There’s also a parent hotline for any questions that you might have.

Waitlist Update

As of right now, all of the calling from the last wave has concluded and no new calling  is currently being done.  Our waitlist is still active though and we are watching to see how some of the remaining deposits shake out to determine if another wave of calling needs to happen.  That’s all I know right now, and will update when I can.

Memorial Day Updates

Thom May 22nd, 2009

A few quick hitting updates before the long weekend:

Waitlist Calls Still Being Made

We continue to reach out to students just recently admitted to Vanderbilt in our second wave of calling.  We’ll see what the response looks like and determine sometime next week if additional waves will need to occur.  Later today, we will be emailing out to anyone admitted in wave 1 from whom we have not heard back.  Since the response deadline provided in the admission letter has now come and gone, the email will inform you that we will be closing your file with us.  This is only going out to students admitted in wave 1, who have now missed the reply deadline.

Incoming class of 2013

The Road to Vanderbilt brochure has gone out, and should be consulted to get a ton of great info.  You can also go to Common Place, which is an info sharing, internal social network site just for the incoming class.  Lastly, if you recently took AP or IB Tests, make sure to send in your results so Vanderbilt can credit your record with any classes you may have received credit for based on your AP/IB scores.

Have a great holiday weekend!
