Senior Week: The Vanderbilt I know

Thom May 4th, 2009

Allow me this interlude . . . The week is senior week here at Vanderbilt. Commencement activities start winding up on Wednesday, which by the way you can follow on Twitter.  There’s a story unfolding at this year’s graduation that reminds me why I love this time of year, and why Vandy is a special place to me.

It is an annual debate I hold with myself: which season is greater, Fall or Spring. Across the world, Fall takes no more majestic shape than on a college campus. While the rest of the world finds autumn as a winding down of the year, at college, it is a starting up of the academic season.

Spring is the true time of renewal, of new green leaves and fresh sprung flowers. Here, it is the time of commencement, a going forth into the world.  As many of you know, I have been at Vanderbilt going on three years now and have fallen in love with its charm. This week I have come across a story of a graduating senior that seems to encapsulate why I think Vandy is such a unique place.  It’s the story of graduating senior Kelly Finan, and her long and inspirational path to this week’s commencement.  It represents the Vanderbilt I have come to know and is well worth the time to read it.

Congratulations to Kelly and all graduating seniors on your own accomplishments going forth from Vanderbilt.

Decision Week Update

admin April 28th, 2008

A couple quick updates on our waitlist for everyone. We’ve been getting a good number of phone calls and emails asking whether we’ll be going to the waitlist, and while admitted students have a few more days to make their decisions known (reply cards should be postmarked by May 1) it does look like we will be going to our waitlist to some degree (as we anticipated).

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1) In our letter that offered a spot on the waitlist, we indicated that we “might” admit students from the waitlist in late April. It now looks like we won’t be looking to start admitting students from the waitlist until early May.

2) We don’t know at this point how many students we will admit from the waitlist. As I’ve mentioned here before, we will assess where we are with our class and seek to round it out (if we need more Oboe players, Chem majors, etc.).

3) Just as a reminder, if you are selected to be admitted from the waitlist, your admissions officer will call and ask if you are still interested in being admitted to Vanderbilt. If you say yes, we will mail you an admissions packet. You will have one week to let us know if you intend to enroll. There’ll be more updates as we know them in the next several days and weeks.

So what’s new in Vandyland? Vanderbilt’s Dean of Admissions, Doug Christiansen was quoted in Time Magazine last week in an article about waitlists (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1734829,00.html).

BlogVU has been created for those of you who are interested in reading other Vanderbilt blogs. It’s a central website for all things Blog-related at Vandy (http://blogvu.wordpress.com/). By the way, did you see that the Chicago Bears took two Vandy players in this weekend’s NFL draft? Chris Williams (OT) in the first round and Earl Bennett (WR) in the third. Perhaps they’ll be marketing themselves as the “Commodores of the Midway.” Jonathan Goff (ILB) was also drafted by the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.

And even though commencement is not until May 9th, they start setting up for it now. I thought you all would enjoy a picture taken this morning.
