Libraries & Archives

With holdings of three million volumes, almost 30,000 journals and serials, of which some 15,000 are electronic, and three million microforms, the Jean and Alexander Heard Library includes the Central Library, Divinity Library, Peabody Library, Alyne Queener Massey Law Library, Walker Management Library, Annette and Irwin Eskind Biomedical Library, Anne Potter Wilson Music Library, Sarah Shannon Stevenson Science and Engineering Library, Special Collections and University Archives, and the Vanderbilt Television News Archive. Access to the library's catalog is available online.

The Vanderbilt Television News Archive is the largest collection of network newscasts and news specials available to the public. Individuals throughout the world may make videotape loan requests for reference, study, classroom instruction, and research. Abstracts of all network newscasts since August 5, 1968, are available online, by subscription to non–Vanderbilt users, at tvnews.vanderbilt.edu.

Facilities

The physical beauty of the Vanderbilt campus is one of the most enduring aspects of the university.  A virtual tour of the campus is available, and here are a few buildings of particular interest to look for:

  • Jacobs Hall and Featheringill Hall – the headquarters of the School of Engineering which includes research labs, computer classrooms, and faculty offices
  • The “Rec” Center – always a favorite among undergraduates because of its climbing wall, weight room, Olympic–sized swimming pool, aerobics room, squash and racquetball courts, and basketball courts
  • Sarratt Student Center – this focal point of campus houses a cinema, study lounges, an art gallery, student publications offices, and the Overcup Oak Pub.  The Office of the Dean of Students and many of our 350 student organizations have offices in Sarratt.
  • Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center – home of the academic, cultural, and social support system for African American students
  • Old Gym – This Victorian architecture houses the Department of History of Art and the Fine Arts Gallery, which features visiting art exhibits and a permanent collection of more than 5,000 objects from more than 40 countries
Computing

Vanderbilt is wired for thought. VUnet, the campus–wide data network, provides access to the Internet, the Web, e–mail, networked file space and OASIS online course registration. ResNet enables a direct connection to VUnet from every Vanderbilt residence hall. Access points to the wireless LAN have been deployed in many areas throughout the campus.

Computer Labs

Some computer labs across campus are open to every student. Other labs, including those operated by the Schools of Engineering, Law and Nursing, are open only to the students of those schools. See these labs’ individual Web pages for more information.
