Academic Support

Many support services are provided, including pre–major and major academic advising and career and personal counseling, to help each student achieve his or her individual goals.

Advising

In addition to the scheduled times faculty are available for advising, Vanderbilt also offers students: tutors, walk–in advising, help desks, independent study groups, study skills and critical thinking workshops, and Writing Studio. Click on the links below to learn more about the faculty in your specific school of interest.

College of Arts and Science
Each student is assigned a faculty adviser who remains with the student until a major is declared. Once a major is declared, the student will have a faculty adviser from the major area of study.

Blair School of Music
Blair students are assigned faculty advisers who assist in the planning of programs and course schedules. Students are required to meet with their advisers prior to registration for each semester.

School of Engineering
Engineering students are required to see their advisers at registration and any other time changes must be made in their programs of study. Any student who has academic difficulty is expected to see his or her faculty adviser for counsel. Faculty advisers also provide career guidance.

Peabody College of Education and Human Development
Peabody students are assigned an academic adviser who is familiar with the student’s major. This adviser helps the student determine the courses that are most suitable for the chosen major and serves as a mentor to the student.

All students need to be aware that enrollment in appropriate courses to fulfill degree requirements and knowledge of university policies and regulations regarding courses are the responsibility of the individual student.

Deans and professional staff in academic programs and in all areas of the Office of the Dean of Students offer counseling services to students as well, including:
