Search Hints for Using the Electronic Directory

General Hints

Name Search

Input only the last name if you encounter problems with your search results. Many times a member uses an initial instead of a first name in our membership database. At other times, members use a middle initial or eliminate the middle initial making an exact search difficult on the first name.

Do not use titles. Do not use periods in names and initials. Our database firm strips all periods from names to make the text compatible with their technology.

Do not use special characters over the vowels such as those used in foreign language browsers.

Institutional Search

It is best to search on a partial name if you encounter problems with your search. Using the phrase "Harvard" will catch the members who list Harvard University, Harvard, Harvard Business School, Harvard Economics Department or Harvard U as their address. This search field checks all three address lines for the search phrase. If you want to know who is employed at Harvard, you need to search the employment fields.

When a member lists UT as their institution and you have searched for University of Tennessee, the record will be excluded. Using "Tennessee" for the search phrase will return University of Tennesee, Tennesee Tech, Middle Tennessee State University, and Tennesee State University. The "UT" listing would still be excluded.

Alma Mater

This field searches the educational institution from which a member obtained their degree. Once you complete your search for "Harvard" in the Alma Mater field, you must click the Directory Information link in the lower left-hand corner of each member's record to view the educational institutions attended.
