Frequently Asked Questions About Membership
Fees for membership are based upon annual income. Membership begins with the issue following posting of your payment. Late payments result in missed issues (no back starts). Membership entitles a person to receive the journals of the Association. Members may also participate in and vote at the Annual Business Meeting, vote in the election of officers, and participate in the group life insurance program. Only individuals may become members. Libraries, institutions, or firms may become subscribers. Subscribers receive the regular journals but do not vote in the election of officers.
What do all the numbers on my mailing label and/or invoice mean? Your mailing label contains all the important information we'll need should you ever contact us. Your account number is the long one which identifies you and all pertinent facts about your subscription. Your expiration date appears as a month and year combination, and indicates the last issue of your current subscription. The closing date indicates the date payments were last posted prior to generating invoices.
What if I don't receive an issue? Occasionally, an issue is damaged or lost in the mail. If your journal doesn't arrive, you should consider the possible reasons why before assuming it's lost. First, check the last issue you received to verify the address and be sure your subscription hasn't expired. Verify that your most recent invoice has been paid. If everything seems to be in order and your issue hasn't arrived, or it arrives damaged, notify our Membership/Subscriber Services Department. We'll be happy to resolve this with you. Claims for missing issues should be made within six months of publication date and must include title, volume and issue number of missing books. Please note that changes of address must be received at least six (6) weeks prior to the publication month.
How do I give a gift subscription? Simply complete a membership application.
Can I get back issues or single issues of the journals? Back issues for a limited number of years are available for members/subscribers who would like to fill in the gaps in their collection or pick up an issue or two they've missed. Issues are sold for $15.00 per copy. To purchase back issues or single issues, send your payment with your request to AEA. Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery.
Can I get reprints of articles? Reprints are generally available from the authors. Authors should be contacted directly or you may purchase a single issue.
Can I get permission to reprint articles? Requests for permission to reprint articles are processed through the Nashville office. Permission to make digital or hard copies of part or all of an article for personal or classroom use is granted without fee provided that copies are not made or distributed for profit or direct commercial advantage and that copies show this notice on the first page or initial screen of a display along with the full citation, including the name of the author. Copyrights for components of a work owned by others than AEA must be honored. Abstracting with credit is permitted. To copy otherwise, to republish, to post on servers, to redistribute to lists, or to use any component of a work in other works, requires prior specific permission and/or a fee. Write to Permissions Coordinator, American Economic Association.
