Program Overview

The Teaching Innovations Program (TIP) for college and university economics instructors seeks to improve undergraduate education in economics by offering instructors an opportunity to expand their teaching skills and participate in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

In Phase 1, faculty members will attend workshops where they work in teams to learn about interactive learning strategies and materials.
In Phase 2, participants return to their institutions and receive on-line instruction on the new teaching techniques for the classroom.
In Phase 3
, participants have new opportunities to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning in economics.

Special emphasis will be given to recruiting minorities and women in cooperation with other AEA committees. About 500 faculty members throughout the nation are expected to participate in the five-year project funded by the National Science Foundation.

The project is co-sponsored by the Committee on Economic Education (CEE) of the American Economic Association (AEA). TIP builds on a long history of work by CEE to promote effective teaching of economics including national workshop programs, teaching sessions at the ASSA meetings, support for regional workshops, and various publications.

TIP will benefit both participating faculty and their home institutions. It will help instructors improve their teaching skills and document their commitment to teaching. It will help colleges and universities by raising the quality of economics instruction that students receive.
